Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related specialized area or field or equivalent experience is required.

 

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Department of Defense Secret security clearance ispreferrred at time of hire, or the ability to obtain one within twelve months of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Engineer to join our growing Mechanical Design and Engineering Services team in support of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

Performs design and development in such areas as cabinets, consoles, electronic enclosures, sensors and integration of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) electronic equipment.

 

Leads development of strategic tasks or small projects by applying engineering and organizational knowledge and expertise to achieve technical goals.

 

Understands and interprets the technical, organizational and process aspects of the task assigned and can relate them to the technical needs of the overall project or organization.

 

Plans and executes small projects or task elements within larger projects, organizations, or for groups of projects.

 

Responsible for the completion of assigned engineering tasks or small projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines.

 

Actively uncovers technical and organizational risks and ensures they are included in risk mitigation plans.

 

May participate in the proposal process.

 

Directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication.

 

Carries out other tasks, not listed, assigned by Lead or Manager.

 

Travel may be required a fraction of the time.
 


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Candidates must demonstrate a passion for innovation, a sophisticated understanding of the need for formal engineering documentation of the design and the ability to effectively develop and evolve GDMS technology, process and documentation.

 

The candidate will be able to demonstrate skills in the following areas:  solid modeling CAD tools, engineering drawings, engineering change and the ability to organize, plan, track and execute on multiple tasks.

 

The Mechanical Engineer 2 is expected to be proficient and able to perform all responsibilities associated with the position. The successful candidate should demonstrate initiative on assignments and be capable of professionally executing more complex tasks with some level of supervision.



PREFERRED DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will have experience working closely with manufacturing and/or field installations to identify and provide solutions to design problems.  This should include prior experience with producing or with altering formal engineering documentation of the design, problem report development and change request generation.

 

The ideal candidate will have experience working with surface ships and Navy programs.  Knowledge of interface cabling and associated design documentation is preferred. Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (G.D.&T.) experience is also a plus.

  

Previous experience with the following software is preferred:  PTC ProEngineer Creo, Adobe Pro, Capital Harness Systems (CHS).
