Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineering background with a demonstrated proficiency in structural design is required – Ansys, FLAC, Inventor, and Revit are current program standards
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) registration, or ability to successfully obtain licensing in near term as stated above
  • Experience with preparation and presentation of technical briefings to communicate analysis results, technical trades, design requirements and specifications, and recommendations to customer technical and management staff is a plus
  • Hands-on construction experience and interest/ability to fabricate physical proof-of-concept mock-ups in a shop/highbay environment is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project and ability to prepare and track schedules is a plus

Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.

 

Clearance Requirements:

Department of Defense SECRET security clearance is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

 

Responsibilities for this Position

GDMS has an immediate opening for a Senior Structural / Civil Engineer to fill an opening on our operations team.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  GDMS employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Structural / Civil Engineer will lead structural analysis required for all program tasking and deliverables, working independently and/or with a team of project engineers, as specific tasking dictates. Structural analysis will include design and development of a range of metal, masonry, composite, and wood structures and components. In addition, there is opportunity to serve as an Integrated Product Team (IPT) lead, and to also support on a diverse range of technical tasking. Scope of tasking could include design, development and production of structural systems with mechanical and utility sub-system components. Work involves hands-on development (design, prototyping, and testing) of one-of-a-kind solutions,often in support of quick response capability (QRC) programs. IPT support could include overall deliverable integration, preparation and presentation of design milestone reviews, scheduling and planning duties, and other special assignments. The role will include working with the program team and sub-contractors in addition to direct interface with customer representatives. 

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Performs design and development in such areas as structural, civil, and mechanical systems and sub-systems
  • Is a subject matter expert (SME) in at least one discipline/field and possesses working knowledge in multiple adjacent disciplines/fields
  • Researches and analyzes data, such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
  • Supports the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate requirements management, standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the system development life cycle
  • May supervise or manage lower level employees
  • Leads technical tasks for small to medium teams or projects
  • Leads small to medium technical projects
  • Provides engineering support to manufacturing/operations; leads small technical proposals and contributes to medium sized proposals
  • Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments
  • Contributes to the successful completion of major programs and projects
  • Frequent contact with senior managers within and outside of Engineering
  • Frequent contact with various departments across the company including, but not limited to, Program Management, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance
  • Frequent contact with external customers and vendors
  • Frequent contact with Business Development
  • Mentors lower labor grades in mechanical principles and project performance
  • Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs
  • Creative, innovative responsibilities requiring advanced decision-making skills
  • Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors
  • Carries out other tasks, not listed, assigned by supervisor
  • Travel may be required
  • Security clearance is required

  • Must have strong proficiency with solid modeling CAD tools to create mechanical models and accompanying drawings

  • Strong knowledge with technical standards, manufacturing/fabrication methods, government/industry standards
  • Prefer strong knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools
  • Demonstrates strong proficiency in writing technical papers and proposals
  • Demonstrates history of leading an engineering project and team
  • Highly skilled in communicating issues, impacts, and corrective actions
  • Strong ability to clearly recognize and report information relevant to sound mechanical engineering design
  • Strong understanding of and the ability to apply basic project leadership principles
  • Independently determines approach to solutions
