Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's of Science or Technology degree in Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience to meet managerial expectations.

 

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Department of Defense Secret security clearance is not at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Engineering Technical Manager.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

 

We are looking for a passionate and talented senior level software development professional to join our innovative team.  Applicants should have a solid computer science foundation and significant experience with designing and developing mission critical applications.  Along with strong technical leadership experience, applicants should also have a deep respect and understanding for how agility and discipline can coexist in the software development process.  Responsibilities include:

  • Performing software requirements analysis
  • Conducting system integration activities
  • Leading research, design, development, and testing of software and tools, to include development of new work products or enhancing existing applications, systems or embedded products.
  • Participating in the proposal process to generate new business.
  • Performing technical planning, verification and validation of others work
  • Conducting cost and risk analysis, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.
  • Performing analysis throughout the software development life-cycle to include concept, design, architecture, user experience, test, installation, operation, and maintenance.

In addition to the software development responsibilities, this role is expected to assume staff management responsibilities in our growing engineering team.  Staff management responsibilities include:

  • Establishing objectives for employees and conducting performance reviews
  • Mentoring and facilitating career growth for direct reports.
  • Providing input into staffing decisions and working with project leads, other management staff, and employees to ensure appropriate staffing of all projects.
  • Approving recurring and ad-hoc HR, IT, and Information Security requests.

BS Degree in CS or a related field such as IS, ECE, or CE plus a minimum of 8 years of directly applicable experience in software development and a minimum of 6 years leading software development teams is required.

  • Technical Skills: Solid background in software development including experience with object oriented programming (Java and JavaScript preferred) and an understanding of the entire software project life cycle. Experience with agile software development processes. Experience with the architecture, design, and development of large-scale, mission-critical, software based systems. Experience with distributed systems and building multi-threaded systems. Very strong computer science theory background (e.g., data structures, algorithms, concurrency, computational complexity).  Exposure to HCI, human factors, user-centered design, and the field of information visualization a plus.
  • Leadership Skills: Leads groups and teams to accomplish project/business goals. Able to effectively direct teams and individuals.  Effective at organizing teams around common goals.  Acts as a positive influencer in the organization. Takes on work outside of the scope of the job description to help ensure a successful product delivery. Understands the big picture and works towards a vision, but also appreciates the importance of the details. Proactively identifies and mitigates risks and defines reasonable trade space from which the team can operate. Effective at clearing roadblocks in order to keep teams and individuals operating efficiently. Demonstrated experience in shaping and influencing processes that facilitate quality and timely execution of tasks.
  • People Management Skills: Ability to identify talent and train new hires. Effective at identifying training and mentoring opportunities and needs in order to facilitate growth of staff. Able to provide effective feedback to staff, formally through personnel evaluations as well as informally. Understands the importance of maximizing alignment of company’s goals with the skills and career ambitions of the staff. Ability to work effectively with a variety of personality types. Maintains a people focused attitude.
  • Organizational Skills: Effective organizational, time management, and planning skills. Effective at prioritizing tasks and demonstrated track record of driving them to completion. Effective at juggling multiple simultaneous tasks.
  • Other Skills: Able to work in a heavily collaborative environment. Takes initiative to coordinate with other stakeholders and communicate status and needs to the rest of the team. Spends a significant amount of time on communication and coordination. Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Demonstrates attention to detail. Able to gets things done despite obstacles. Deals well with ambiguity and changing requirements in a fast-paced environment. Takes on work outside of the scope of the job description to help ensure a successful product delivery. Understands the big picture and works towards a vision, but also appreciates the importance of the details.
