Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in software engineering or a related technical field is required (or equivalent experience), plus a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience. Agile experience preferred.



  • Thought leader in High Performance Computing.
  • Working knowledge of at least one of the following:
    • Machine Learning
    • Predictive Modeling and Analysis
    • Graph Analytics
    • CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
    • Large scale data visualization
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem solving skills.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as C, C++, Java
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language such as Python, Perl, Ruby, Go
  • Ability to develop High Performance Computing (HPC) software using parallel programming techniques (e.g. MPI, OpenMP, SHMEM, UPC)
  • Significant experience with Linux on large scale systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and flexibly as part of a team in both engineering and research environments.
  • Excellent presentation, communication and inter-personal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to communicate advanced technical concepts to non-specialist audiences.


  • Experience as a government contractor in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with a high level of customer interaction
  • Development and debugging in highly-scalable, distributed, large multi-node environment
  • Open source development contributions
  • Experience working with both high performance clusters and commercial supercomputers (e.g. Cray, SGI, IBM)
  • Skills with languages/technologies like R, MATLAB, CUDA, OpenCL, SystemVerilog
  • Working knowledge of Systems-of-Systems architectures
  • Experience with hardware simulation and/or emulation to model both algorithms and system architectures
  • Familiarity with security, information assurance, multitenancy as related to HPC


  • Doctorate degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or Software Engineering


An active Department of Defense TS/SCI with Polygraph security clearance is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.


Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Senior Principal High Performance Computing Software Researcher. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.



  • Lead and participate in the research, design, and development of systems software, software applications and/or tools that enable execution of High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and applications
  • Participate in development of intellectual property and potential product ideas
  • Direct and coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts
  • Work with other senior researchers and thought leaders to develop briefings and technical reports to be delivered to senior management and customers
  • Conceive, design, prototype and/or implement advanced algorithms aimed at generating solutions to critical problems
  • Assess and optimize algorithm performance on real-world data
  • Maintain substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art HPC principles and actively participate in HPC community and related activities including professional societies
  • Directly contribute to the achievement of business objectives
  • Mentor and coach junior team members
